Explanation

The Past Continuous (Past Progressive) describes actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. Structure: • Affirmative: Subject + was/were + verb-ing • Negative: Subject + was/were + not + verb-ing • Question: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing? Usage: 1. Action in progress at a specific past time: At 8 PM, I was watching TV. 2. Interrupted action: I was cooking when the phone rang. 3. Two parallel actions: While she was reading, he was sleeping. 4. Background/setting in stories: The sun was shining and birds were singing. 5. Temporary past situations: I was living in Paris at that time. Past Simple vs Past Continuous: • Past Simple: completed action → The phone rang. (short, completed) • Past Continuous: action in progress → I was sleeping. (ongoing at that moment) Key Time Expressions: • at [time], when, while, as, all day/night/morning
